However, Great Britain captain Anne Keothavong could opt to bring in the experience of Heather Watson on Saturday.

Watson is ranked outside the top 150 in the world but her experience in the tournament could give her an added edge if Great Britain hope to inspire a comeback.

The 30-year-old has spent the day cheering her team mates on from the sidelines but could be called into action on Saturday.

Great Britain face an uphill task to reach the Billie Jean King Cup Finals after losing both singles matches on day one of their tie against France.

Katie Boulter was beaten 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2) by world number five Caroline Garcia to put France 1-0 up.

Harriet Dart, the highest-ranked player in Emma Raducanu's absence, then lost 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-3) to Alize Cornet.

It means France have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five tie, which concludes at Coventry Arena on Saturday.

There have been just seven comebacks from 2-0 down in the competition, which was formerly known as the Fed Cup, since the best-of-five format was adopted in 1995.

On day two, there will be two more singles rubbers which Britain must win to ensure the doubles match is needed to decide the tie.

The winners will earn a spot in the 12-nation finals of the women's team event in November.

  5. 'Very happy to be part of this team'

    Dart 6-7 (6-8) 6-7 (3-7) Cornet

More from France's Alize Cornet, who says: "I'm actually winning more matches than at the beginning of my career. I'm feeling very glad, very happy to be part of this team.

"The atmosphere between us is really good and I only have positive energy when I go on court. I'm very proud to be playing for France 15 years later.

"It was a very tight match, score wise but also nerves wise. It's never easy to play for your country, you have a lot of emotions going through your mind. The tie-break in the first set was so close."

On a potential match with Katie Boulter tomorrow, Cornet adds: "Katie really impressed me against Caroline. Her strikes are amazing, I have to be 100% fit to counter punch.

"Caroline is starting up against Harriet so hopefully I will not have to play."

  6. 'Super hard physically'

Winner Alize Cornet says: "I'm so relieved, it was such a huge fight against Harriet. We both gave our best on court and it was super hard physically and I'm very happy to get through in two sets. The third set would've been very tough for both of us.

"Five tie-breaks today, this tie is so tough and we knew we could not let go of a single point.

"The Billie Jean King Cup is very different than the tour but I knew what to expect and she did too. We were starting from scratch, I was just trying to be focused and stay positive and fight - and that's what I did.

"I love the game, love playing tennis, it's not easy every day but these kind of matches in this kind of atmosphere with my team-mates behind me gives me so much joy.

"The love of the game is why I'm so consistent."

  7. Boulter's loss tipped 'on a few points'

After she fought back to beat Katie Boulter in a tense match, Caroline Garcia was asked what she thought are the key differences in the pivotal moments between a top-10 player like herself and someone like the Brit who is clearly talented but outside the world top 150.

"Today we can't really say it's been played on a lot of points. It was just really few points here and there. I mean, three tie-breakers is really a few points," said the French world number five.

"She was more aggressive I think in the tie-break of the first set, I did good in the second and I tried to be aggressive in the third one.

"You don't know if it's going to pay off but that's my game style.

"I was convinced the match was going away from me [in the third set] and I managed to change it in a bit better direction.

Is it experience of playing these crunch points in the bigger matches? "It's really hard to explain. I wish it was experience I'm not too sure you know. It's just tennis and you have to go for it - today it went on my side."

  8. Post update

Incredible stint from the players and fans today with every single set going to a tie-break.

    It's been some slog!

France take a 2-0 lead into tomorrow but the Brits have made it hard work. Can they overturn the deficit and take it to a deciding doubles match?

  9. 'Managed her game superbly well'

Alize Cornet doing the job, she managed her game superbly well against Harriet Dart who is out of form.

In the really big points the match slipped away. She was a break up twice but we know how tough a competitor Cornet is, she dug in and somehow got the win.

What an intense, absorbing and draining day it's been.

The British fans want some positivity after two close and chastening defeats, I know.

However... this stat won't cheer them up.

There have been just seven comebacks from 2-0 down in the competition, which was formerly known as the Fed Cup, since the best of five format was adopted in 1995.

Tomorrow Britain must win the two singles rubbers to ensure the doubles match is needed to decide the tie.

  11. Game, set and match - Alize Cornet (France)

    Dart 6-7 (6-8) 6-7 (3-7)

It's another tie-break heartbreak for Great Britain!

Alize Cornet makes Harriet Dart run, as she has done all match, and smashes the volley to take the tie break 7-3.

Huge grit and determination from the Brit but the experience of Cornet shone through and she puts France 2-0 up in the Billie Jean King Cup after two hours and 27 minutes.

  12. Post update

Alize Cornet's shot floats over the baseline and Harriet Dart does a little fist pump, 6-3. This isn't over.

Cornet shakes her head in frustration.

Bit of frustration now from Harriet Dart, 4-1 and back to Alize Cornet to serve.

  18. Post update

Ohhh that's unlucky. Harriet Dart just misses the cross-court shot, 3-1.

Dart can't believe she didn't win that point either.

  19. Post update

Harriet Dart into the net on Alize Cornet's second serve, 2-1 to the Frenchwoman.

Dart will have a go at serving.
